Insights / FDE AI Client Communication
How do I explain an AI product to a client who isn’t technical?
Lead with the recommendation, then give the evidence, the business impact, the trade-off and the next action. Technical detail supports the recommendation. It shouldn’t be the explanation.
The situation
From technical explanation to recommendation.
Knowing the system is not the same as explaining it while being questioned.
In a session with an engineer, I worked on moving from technical explanations to recommendations. The session covered his application, AI, data privacy and the choices involved in building a recommendation system.
The breakdown
Accurate detail, no decision.
The technology may be strong. The explanation still has to land with a client, executive or product stakeholder who needs to understand it and act on it.
What I work on
A client-ready structure.
I asked him to structure a client-ready response around the recommendation, evidence, business impact, trade-off and next action.
The aim is to explain architecture, workflows and limitations without hiding behind jargon.
Practice
Build one recommendation.
- Take one decision from your current project.
- Write one line each for the recommendation, evidence, business impact, trade-off and next action.
- Say it aloud without jargon the client wouldn’t use, then ask someone to question the trade-off.
