Insights / Interview Communication
How do I answer “How do you use AI at work?”
Describe one task you actually performed: what you needed, what AI did, what you checked and what remained your responsibility. A list of tools doesn’t answer the question. One checked example does.
The situation
The follow-up asks for an example.
An interviewer asks how you use AI. You list tools and say they save time. Then comes the follow-up: “Give me an example. How did you check the output?”
The breakdown
A list of tools isn’t an example.
A list of tools says what you have access to, not how you work. The follow-up asks for a real task and your judgment in it.
How I would coach it
Start with one real task.
I would start with one task you actually performed: what you needed, what AI did, what you checked, and what remained your responsibility.
Unclear
You list tools and say they save time.
Clearer
“I use AI to help organize a first draft of a team update. I provide the information, then check the draft against our records and rewrite anything unclear. It helps with the structure, but I’m responsible for the accuracy and the final message.”
Practice
Prepare one checked example.
- Choose one task where you really used AI.
- Write four short notes: what you needed, what AI did, what you checked, what stayed your responsibility.
- Ask someone to follow up with “How did you check the output?” and answer from your notes.
