How can I prepare for a BPO voice and accent assessment?
I can’t tell you how a particular employer will assess you, because formats vary. What I work on is clear, understandable speech: specific sounds, your mouth position, and listening to your own delivery through recordings.
The situation
Sounds that blur together.
In one pronunciation session, I worked with a learner on distinguishing B, W and V sounds.
The breakdown
It is hard to hear your own delivery.
It is difficult to judge your own pronunciation while you are speaking. A sound can feel right to you and still blur for the listener.
What I work on
Position, listening and recordings.
I corrected his mouth position and asked him to listen to his own delivery. I agreed with him to include short pronunciation practice and use recordings for feedback.
The aim is to be understood, not to imitate another accent. I explain that in How to improve pronunciation without losing your accent.
Practice
Record, listen, correct.
- Pick a few words from your own call scripts that use B, W and V.
- Record yourself saying them, then listen back.
- Check your mouth position on the sounds that blur, and record again.
