How to give a presentation without reading from slides.
Use the slide as a visual cue—not a manuscript. Carry one clear point, explain it in your own words, direct attention to the evidence and move the audience to the next idea.

Use the slide as a cue, then speak to the room.
To stop reading from slides, prepare the spoken message separately from the slide. Give each slide one job, remember its central point, explain the meaning in your own words, refer only to the evidence the audience needs and use a clear transition. Speaker notes can hold keywords and data—but not a full paragraph you feel forced to reproduce.
MAKE IT USEFUL
Cue. Point. Explain. Show. Move.
The order keeps the speaker connected to the audience while the slide provides visual support.
Read the slide silently.
Take one breath and identify its job before speaking.
Say what matters.
“The main change here is the reduction in response time.”
Add the meaning.
Tell the audience why the change matters or how it happened.
Use the visual evidence.
Direct attention to the relevant bar, phrase, image or comparison.
Link the next idea.
“That improvement came from one process change, which the next slide shows.”
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
Practice retrieval, not recitation.
The aim is not to deliver identical wording every time. The aim is to preserve the message when the wording changes.
Write one point per slide.
Use a short cue card or speaker note—not a paragraph.
Explain each slide in 20 seconds.
This exposes whether the central idea is actually clear.
Change the wording.
Deliver the same meaning a second time using different sentences.
